The two machines complement each other, allowing us to handle a wider range of electronics components with greater efficiency and flexibility.
The Yamaha YS12 is primarily used for placing smaller components with a maximum height of 6,5 mm, while the Yamaha YS12F handles larger components with heights of up to 15 mm.
With this investment in our SMT machine park, we strengthen both the flexibility and the delivery times we offer our customers, and our position as a reliable electronics manufacturing partner.
Capacity and precision: What the Yamaha machines brings to the line
Both machines are compact, high-speed modular surface-mount machines designed for accurate and efficient component placement. Although the two machines share many technical specifications, they differ in placement speed, the number of components they can pick up simultaneously and the maximum component height they can handle.

Yamaha YS12 – high-speed placement
The Yamaha YS12 is optimized for high-speed placement of smaller electronic components.
- Capable of picking up to 10 components simultaneously.
- Maximum theoretical placement speed of 36,000 components per hour under optimal conditions.
- Handles components with a maximum height of 6.5 mm.
- Primarily used for high-volume placement of smaller SMT components.
Yamaha YS12F – flexible component placement
The Yamaha YS12F is designed to provide greater flexibility when handling larger and more complex components.
- Capable of picking up to 5 components simultaneously.
- Maximum theoretical placement speed of 20,000 components per hour under optimal conditions.
- Handles components with a maximum height of 15 mm.
- Suitable for larger components, including connectors and other components requiring additional placement clearance.
Both machines offer high placement accuracy, with a specified accuracy of ±0.05 mm and repeatability of ±0.03 mm. They support a wide range of component packages, from miniature chip components measuring just 0.4 × 0.2 mm to larger components, including fine-pitch devices such as QFP and BGA packages. Both machines also support PCB sizes of up to 510 × 460 mm.
By combining the speed of the YS12 with the greater component height capability of the YS12F, we can distribute placement tasks efficiently between the two machines.
In practice, this provides several advantages:
- Increased production capacity:
Higher component placement throughput and improved efficiency across the SMT line. - Wider component compatibility:
The ability to handle both miniature SMT components and larger electronic components. - Consistent placement accuracy:
High precision and repeatability throughout production runs. - Greater production flexibility:
Efficient handling of both prototype assemblies and larger production batches.
Machine installation, from delivery to full operation
The installation was carried out in close collaboration with Brian Thiel, service engineer at BTh-SMT, our machine supplier. Brian was on site throughout the installation and commissioning process, working closely with Jøran Lygren, the technician responsible for the PCB assembly line at Ixys.
The work included mechanical installation, machine setup, calibration and preparation for production.

Thanks to thorough preparation and close cooperation, both machines were successfully installed, calibrated and brought into full operation with minimal disruption to ongoing production.
What the increased PCB assembly capacity means for our customers
For our customers, the benefits are clear. Greater capacity and flexibility in the assembly line mean we can take on more assignments, switch between products faster and shorten lead times. By investing in modern, reliable SMT equipment, we ensure that our production line is equipped to meet both current production requirements and future growth.
We look forward to making full use of our increased production capacity and continuing to deliver high-quality PCB assembly services to our customers.
