Ixys participate in the opening of the K-lab Marine Robotics Centre

November 3, 2026

On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, the K-lab Nautical Autonomy, Robotics and Research Centre (KNARR) was officially opened at the Kårstø processing plant in Tysvær. Ixys was one of the invited suppliers.

A unique test and development centre

KNARR is a new facility for the testing, qualification and development of marine robotic technologies. It is the first facility of its kind in Norway, and one of the first globally, to be integrated with an operational industrial plant. This provides a unique opportunity to develop technology in a real operational environment.

The centre was opened by the Minister of Research and Higher Education, Eileen Fugelsnes. Hege Skryseth, Equinor’s executive vice president for Technology, Digitalisation, and Innovation, was also present. Among the participants were representatives from Equinor and Gassco, the supplier industry, research communities and government authorities – a clear signal that marine robotics and autonomous operations play a central role in the energy production of the future.

Ixys showcased its control system for remote operations

During the opening event, Ixys demonstrated the control system that will be installed at KNARR. Ixys deliveries include both hardware and software, with VJU Studio as the real-time HMI platform.

Representing Ixys at the event were Tarje Angelskår (CCO), Erlend Apeland (Senior Sales Engineer) and Bjørn F. Esaiassen (Senior System Architect). The stand facilitated many productive conversations with Equinor, other suppliers, and research communities.

“It is an honour to be invited as one of Equinor’s suppliers on this occasion. It confirms that our technology is relevant in one of the country’s most important development hubs for marine robotics, and it was inspiring to see the breadth of technology on display.”

Equinor places great emphasis on local suppliers who help maintain and develop Norwegian expertise in robotics, subsea technology and digitalisation. With development, design and production located in Bryne, Norway, Ixys offers short response times, close collaboration and full control over quality throughout the value chain.

Collaboration across the industry

KNARR builds upon Norway’s strong expertise in marine robotics and the maritime business sector, and Equinor highlight that the center will be available for use across maritime industries.

For Ixys, taking part in the opening is an important step in our collaboration with some of the most forward-looking players in the Norwegian energy sector. We look forward to closely following developments at Kårstø and to contributing control systems that make remote operations safer and more efficient.
