Through hands-on engineering projects, Yi Ken Chng and Sebastian Reglund Jøssang have gained valuable experience while contributing to the the development of our products and tools.
With one year remaining before completing their bachelor´s degrees, both students have spent the summer applying their academic knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.
From student rocket project to Ixys
Yi Ken and Sebastian first became familiar with Ixys through the student rocket project GHOST, organized through a student organization at the University of Oslo.
While attending the launch campaign at Andøya Space, they met Otto, Hardware Engineer, and Tage, Technician, from Ixys. After learning about the company through presentations and conversations, they decided to apply for summer internships.
Both were offered positions.
A summer of engineering challenges
During their eight-week internship at Ixys, Yi Ken and Sebastian have worked on both hardware and software development, with two specific assignments:
Expanding circuit board testing
Their first assignment focused on improving the automated testing of Ixys circuit boards.
“When we started, only a few basic tests were being run on the boards. We have developed additional tests to make the process much more comprehensive and improve the ability to detect potential issues.”

According to Ole Morten Haaland, Embedded Hardware Manager at Ixys, the students quickly became productive and have delivered very good results.
Integrating 3D model visualization into VJU Studio
After completing the first project, they moved on to a more advanced software challenge: integrating 3D model visualization into VJU Studio.
“This has been incredibly exciting. We have been given a lot of freedom in how we approach the challenge. The goal is clear, but we´re trusted to deside the best way to get there.”

The students have worked independently while receiving guidance and regular feedback from Ole Morten Haaland and Andreas Skaar, Software Manager at Ixys.
“Andreas has been quick to review our work and provide feedback, which has helped us to maintain good momentum. By the second day, we had already made significant progress.”

A steep learning curve
Both students describe the internship as an intense and rewarding learning experience.
Yi Ken has significantly expanded his software skills.
“I didn´t know much about software development when I started, but through these projects, I´ve learned both Python and game engines.”
Sebastian highlights the importance of writing software that is built to last.
“One of the biggest lessons has been learning how to solve problems in a way that makes the code scalable, maintainable, and easy for others to understand and build upon.”
Both students agree that 99% of what they have learnd is relevant to their remaining studies and future careers.
Balancing work and summer
The internship lasts eight weeks, with a one-week break that gave the students an opportunity to return to Oslo for a short holiday.
Have you had time to do anything fun while you´ve been in Jæren?
“Yes, we attended the Gladmat Festival in Stavanger! And of course, we´ve been following the FIFA World Cup, which we find very exciting. Watching the games with good food has been a great way to relax after work.”

During their stay, they have been living with Sebastian´s grandparents in Hafrsfjord, around 30 kilometers north of Bryne.
Looking ahead
After completing their bachelor´s degrees, both Yi Ken and Sebastian plan to continue their education with master´s studies, in either cybernetics or robotics.
We are grateful for the contribution they have made during their time at Ixys and wish them every success as they complete their studies and begin their careers in technology and engineering.
